Today, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a new Insights titled CISA Insights: Global Positioning System (GPS) Interference, which provides a summary of a January 2022 GPS interference event, recommended actions GPS users should take now to make their system resilient and avoid degradation of services, as well as guidance on how and when to report GPS interference.

The January GPS interference event occurred over a 33-hour period in the vicinity of Denver International Airport due to a transmitter errantly broadcasting in the GPS frequency.  More recently, in October, a GPS interference event occurred over a 40-mile area near the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport that lasted two days.

While GPS interference can come from both intentional and unintentional sources, it is important for owners, operators, and users of GPS-reliant systems and networks to understand the risks and how to mitigate them.

CISA encourages users to follow the guidance in this CISA Insights to enhance the security and resilience of the nation's critical assets that rely on positioning, navigation, and timing.
